VSC Event Tracking Form

Graduates of our Citizens’ Police Academy are eligible to join the Volunteer Service Corp (VSC).

VSC’s mission is to provide support to the Ypsilanti Police Department in ways that allows the Chief of Police to maximize the effectiveness of his officers and staff in the community.

Volunteers provide extra “eyes and ears” and visibility during special city events, such as parades and the Heritage Festival. In 2005, they also began walking foot patrols in the Midtown business district.

When performing these duties, volunteers wear special uniforms and carry police radios. Typically, they patrol in pairs.

Volunteers only observe and report. They do not intervene or make contact with anyone engaged in questionable activity. If they observe such activity, their sole duty is provide details to police officers.

VSC members also find other ways to support the YPD. For example, they provide support during the Citizens’ Police Academy. This website is maintained by volunteer Greg Lyon. John Northup of Bannister Design also donated his expertise.

Robert Miller chairs the VSC, and Karen Perkett serves as the administrative volunteer coordinator.
