The Anne M. Hayes Memorial Fund was established in 1996 by Douglas A. Hayes, professor emeritus of
finance at the University of Michigan, in memory of his wife Anne, a long-time
Thrift Shop member and civic leader who died in January of that year. The income from the endowment fund is distributed
twice a year, in June and December, to social service agencies serving
clients in the Ann Arbor area. Grants
usually range from $2,000—$5,000. We are pleased to announce that in December 2006 the
Anne M. Hayes Committee made a grant of $4,000 to the Center for the Childbearing Year. The grant
will fund about 8 scholarships for low-income women to become volunteer
doulas. Doula is a Greek word for a
woman who is specially trained to provide emotional, educational and
logistical support to women during pregnancy, birth and the first six weeks
post-partum. The Committee also made a $1,000 award to Alpha House, which is the shelter for homeless families on
Jackson Road between Wagner and Zeeb. The grant will be used to pay the
Chelsea WAVE bus line to stop in front of the shelter. Agencies are invited to apply for June 2007
grants by submitting request for funding proposals.
