Every day a Thrift Shop member answers requests from social service case
workers on behalf of local residents who need emergency aid for clothing,
housing, utility bills, medical or dental care, car repair, or
transportation. Most of these people
need immediate one-time help not normally provided by local, state or federal
programs to overcome short-term difficulties.
The Thrift Shop gives between $6,000 and $10,000 a month, usually in
amounts under $300, in response to these requests. In addition, regular monthly support and
special seasonal grants are given to various community agencies. These
currently include: · Motor Meals of Ann Arbor · Peace Neighborhood Center · St. Andrew’s Breakfast Program · Michigan Ability Partners · The Child Care Network · The Salvation Army (Arbor Haven) · Friends in Deed · The Shelter Association of Ann Arbor And, of course, you benefit. You
get high quality merchandise at low, low prices, with the satisfaction of
knowing that your shopping helps others in your community. |
