The following is a list of links and materials referenced on the GSWC website which pertain to researching
in the United States or in other countries. A brief description of each one appears by topic below along
with other helpful hints. |
| Census | |
Facts in Canadian Federal Census, 1851-1901 Facts in U.S. Federal Census, 1790-1860 Facts in U.S. Federal Census, 1870-1920 For each year of the Federal Census, these two pages list the type of information that can be found, such as address, marital status, children's names, etc. |
| Internet Links | |
Great Lists of Genealogy Links Many websites consist of nothing more than links to other Internet locations, like having a giant bookmark page of your own. For genealogy, Cyndi's List is the supreme example of these compendium websites. This page lists a few of the best, along with a description of each one. Internet Links to U.S. and World Resources A compendium of Internet links grouped by subject areas and topic which apply to researching in the United States and in other countries. Internet Links to Libraries and Archives A long list of Internet links to libraries, library associations, Internet libraries, Michigan and national libraries, genealogy lending libraries, genealogical and historical libraries, archives and special collections. The Best Web Search Resources There are over 1,000 search engines on the world wide web. Where to begin? This page presents only the cream of the crop under the following subheadings: Meta Search, Search the Web, Search Newsgroups, Zip Code Lookups, 800 Numbers, People Finders, Surname Search, Place Name Search, Travel, Maps, Weather, and Internet Directories. |
| Microforms | |
LDS Microforms on Indefinite Loan The GSWC/LDS library holds over 2,000 microfiche and microfilm rolls on indefinite loan. Only 100 of these are for Michigan; the rest are for other states, other countries, and various subjects. Even if you don't live nearby, you may find the list of film numbers useful since these can be ordered from any LDS Family History Center. |

Guide to Correspondence The Handbook of Genealogical Correspondence was written over twenty-five years ago and is long out of print. This guide seeks to fill the gap with many of the tips from the book augmented by those from contemporary genealogists and genealogy columnists. Bibliography: Handy References This bibliography lists over 100 books of use to genealogists with call numbers for where they can be found in local repositories including the Ann Arbor District Library, the Detroit Public Library Burton Historical Collection, the Library of Michigan, and the University of Michigan Graduate Library. Bibliography: UM Grad Library Genealogy: A Guide to Family History Resources at the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library, The University of Michigan is a guide to doing genealogy at the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library, originally written by librarian Don Callard, updated and expanded to cover 14 topics and 125 bibliographic sources with call numbers. Many of the sources are typical of those found at large university libraries and genealogical repositories, so the list is also good for learning what materials might be available at a university near you. [Genealogy Helplist] Not on the GSWC website, this location provides a list of volunteers who may be able to assist other researchers by looking up some specific kind of information. [USGenWeb] and [WorldGenWeb] Not on the GSWC website, GENWEB is another excellent resource for anyone searching in the United States. GENWEB also has its world counterpart. |
