Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County, Michigan, Inc. The Genealogist's Internet Primer, by Sharon L. Brevoort Telnet To run a program on a host computer, first log on to that computer through telnet software which must be installed on your PC. Once connected, your PC can be used as if it were a directly connected terminal. Log on according to the instructions given on the organization's Internet home page. You may need a numeric IP address or an alphabetic domain name address which identifies the host computer. If the site does not have a default, you may also need a port number. Use the logon command for that location. Most systems will give you a list of commands when you type "help" or "?". When finished, disconnect using the command for that site, usually quit, bye or off. An easy way search for telnet locations is by using the Galaxy search engine on the Web. Mark the telnet radio button (and turn of the world-wide web). There are also websites that specialize in library and telnet resources; some of those listed below also give details about logging on and off. Telnet access information, if available, may also appear on the home page of a particular library. AOL: select "Internet", "Internet Extras", "Telnet" for instructions on installing and running telnet under the AOL browser. Lists of Telnet Sites
