Genealogical Society of Washtenaw County, Michigan, Inc.
The Genealogist's Internet Primer, by Sharon L. Brevoort

Mailing Lists

A mailing list is a newsgroup that arrives by e-mail. There are literally hundreds of genealogical mailing lists including some covering various general topics, geographic localities, and surnames, and all free. There are many more mailing lists than newsgroups, since some topics are not of interest to a large enough group of people. The number of members varies widely from one mailing list to the next, and the number of messages you receive can also fluctuate. Group discussions are handled through a central list server. Participants' messages are sent to one central address to be redistributed to all other participants by the list server. To send and receive newsgroup messages, you can use your e-mail software - Eudora or the one from your service provider.

Some newsgroups can be received as mailing lists. The soc.genealogy.misc newsgroup, for example, can be received from the GENMSC-L mailing list. John Fuller lists these under the corresponding newsgroup on the Genealogical Resources on the Internet newsgroups page.

AOL: select "Internet", "Internet Extras", "Mailing List" for a directory.

Subscribing to a Mailing List

To subscribe to a mailing list discussion, send e-mail to the list server following the instructions on the organization's home page. If you use a signature file, you may need to disable it before subscribing. You will receive a confirmation message which explains the basics. Read this carefully and save a copy for future reference. Research a list before joining it and select carefully to avoid information overload.

Participating in Discussion

Discussion group messages are sent to your e-mail address. These may be sent as individual messages or as a digest of many messages in a single file, and you may have the option to select between them. Past discussions and related information may also be available. Read the list for a week or more before posting your first message to get a feel for the tone; this is known as "lurking". Read the FAQ and follow guidelines posted by the list owners. Keep to the list topic and adhere to any formatting requirements. Practice good netiquette.

There are two ways to respond to a message. If your response is of general interest, just post your reply to the e-mail address of the mailing list for all to see. If not, send e-mail directly to the person who posted that message. Note: the e-mail address you use for subscribing will be different from the one you use to send messages. If the group is moderated, your message will be screened before it is sent to other members.

Unsubscribing from a Mailing List

Remember to use NOMAIL or POSTPONE features to temporarily suspend your subscription to very active lists before leaving on vacation unless you don't mind a very full mailbox! Leave all lists before canceling or changing your e-mail address. Instructions are included in the welcome message you received on joining and may also be repeated on the list's home page.

Life Cycle of a Mailing List

Remember that mailing lists come and go as researchers' interests change over time; new surname mailing lists appear every week and inactive ones disappear. The list of topics and surnames below is only a sampling of what you might find. Some of these may have faded by the time you read this page, and many new ones will have formed.

Lists of Mailing Lists

Both Cyndi's List and the National Genealogical Society's NetGuide offer extensive selections. John Fuller's Genealogy Resources on the Internet list is conveniently organized by subject: general, software, surname, geographic US and non-US. Vickey Lindsay offers a very comprehensive alphabetical listing. Publicly Accessible Mailing Lists is a searchable database - try searching on "genealogy" or on a surname or topic.

In alphabetized lists, watch out for entries that may be misalphabetized. Also, some newsgroup names have an extra prefix such as "GEN" or include more than one surname which may cause them to be listed differently than might be expected.
