The Genealogist's Internet Primer, by Sharon L. Brevoort

Citing Internet Sources

The great challenge to citing Internet resources comes from the transient nature of the materials. Resources come and go, do not have page numbers, are frequently moved, and are seldom archived. The various guidelines listed below cover this subject very well.

Sources: Their Use and Acknowlegement from Dartmouth College is an excellent overview on the subject of citation with seventeen pages of examples, each shown in APA and MLA styles, scientific style, and used in a footnote. Both print and electronic examples are given. There is also an excellent discussion of what constitutes plagiarism. [Table of Contents]

Online: A Reference Guide to Using Online Resources by Andrew Harnack and Eugene Kepplinger. Several sections from the book by the same name appear online. The section on Citation Styles is particularly useful and gives examples in each of four popular citation styles: MLA Style, APA Style, Chicago Style, and CBE Style.

MLA-Style Citations of Electronic Sources by Janice R. Walker. This popular style sheet from the University of South Florida gives examples for email, FTP, telnet, gopher, and websites and is endorsed by the Alliance for Computers & Writing.

MLA Style lists the official guidelines put out by the Modern Language Association.

Bibliographic Formats for Citing Electronic Information by Nancy B. Crane and Xia Li. This page from the University of Vermont links to Electronic Sources: APA Style of Citation and Electronic Sources: MLA Style of Citation based on the authors' book by the same name.

The Public Service Librarian's Professional Guide to Internet Resources from the Winsor School in Boston puts out a succinct guide, Citing Sources: A Guide Based on WARP and the MLA Style. A list of other useful links can be found under the heading Writing, Research, and Citations

Citing Internet Resources from Classroom Connect, Inc. is another succinct list of examples.
