Milan's
Hack House

The Hack House, headquarters of the Milan Historical Society, will be operated by a new Historical Commission to be established by the city. The historical society will maintain their office there (as reported in the Milan News-Leader, 12 August, 1998). (9/18/98)

Online

The Ypsilanti District Library is adding historical information to their Internet site and creating a home page for the Ypsilanti Historical Society Museum and Archives. Documents and photographs from the Archives are being indexed and scanned. Files done to date include those of Elijah McCly and Preston Tucker. These files will be completely indexed and searchable. The GSWC has just completed its newest publication, Washtenaw County, Michigan, Plat Maps, 1856 and 1864 edited by Nancy H. Krohn and Mary L. Liskow. The book of plat maps is a reproduction in atlas form of township maps from Bechler & Wenig (1856) and Samuel Geil's (1864) wall maps with an every name index to land owners and businesses. Locations of cemeteries, churches, schools, and post offices are identified. (See Plat Maps.)

The GSWC has also revised their Directory of Cemeteries of Washtenaw County, a mini-encyclopedia of all known cemeteries in Washtenaw County listed by township with a map and description for each. No cemetery listings are included, but sources for transcriptions are indicated. Reference copies are available at the Ann Arbor District Library, the Bentley Historical Library, the Burton Historical Collection, the Library of Michigan, the Ypsilanti District Library, and the Ypsilanti Historical Museum. The Ypsilanti Historical Museum and Archives is offering two new reprints for sale, the Heritage Collection Illustrated Atlas of Washtenaw County for the years 1874, 1895, and 1915, and the Story of Ypsilanti, originally published in 1923. Contact the museum for information. (9/15/97)

Dolph
Funeral Home
Records

The records for the Dolph Funeral Home have been archived at the Bentley Historical Library. Many of the records relate to burials of people who came to Ann Arbor from somewhere else - the staff and faculty of the University of Michigan. These records list funerals, costs, and may contain a copy of the obituary and biographical information. (9/15/97)

Necrology
Records

The University of Michigan Alumni Office has transferred its voluminous paper-based Alumni Necrology data to the Bentley Historical Library. The portion which has been accessioned comprises 65,000 envelopes which contain clippings, obituaries, correspondence, etc., of alumni who died prior to 1966. (4/14/97)

Down the Myrtle Path: The History and Memories of Town Hall School

This book by Hannah Geddes Wright may be purchased from the author at 4209 N. Dearing Rd., Parma, MI 49269. Read the bittersweet saga of Town Hall School, its history and the sweet memories of former students and teachers, and the sad ending of an era in 1957 followed by the beginning of another in 1987 when the Pittsfield Township one-room schoolhouse was moved to the Eastern Michigan University campus. The cost is $12 plus $2 shipping and handling. "Anyone who is interested in Washtenaw County will be interested in this new book. Huron River

In an upcoming book, Nick Marsh will be writing about several abandoned mills on the Huron River including Osborne Mills and Hudson Mills. Any photographs would be greatly appreciated.
