Formats & Saving Files |
Each of the forms listed on the Research Tools pages may be in any of several different formats,
most commonly in HyperText Markup Language or HTML. The format is given in parentheses. If no format
is listed, it is in HTML. HTML Format Most of them are in HTML format; your browser displays them on your screen. These can be printed from your browser by selecting File>Print, or they can be saved to your hard drive. Select File>Save As, navigate to the directory where you want it to be saved, then click Save. GIF or JPEG Format Some are in GIF or JPEG format, displayed within an HTML page. These can also be printed from your browser by selecting File>Print. You can save the HTML page to your hard drive as above, but the graphics file containing the form must be saved separately. Right click on the form, select Save Image As, navigate to the directory where you want it to be saved, then click Save. Acrobat PDF Format Some forms are in Acrobat PDF format. When you click on one of these, your browser may prompt you to open it or to save it to disk. If the Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed on your PC, the file can be opened, displayed, and printed using Acrobat or you can save the file and open it later. Acrobat Reader is free software which can be downloaded from the Adobe website. Other Formats A few files are in other formats, such as the templates in Excel, Word, WordPerfect, and Claris Works. For the IBM-compatible PC, these files are compressed in ZIP files. First, download the template file(s) and save them on your hard drive as above. Then, if WinZip is installed on your PC, open the ZIP file to have its contents automatically extracted by WinZip. WinZip is shareware; you can download a free evaluation copy to use temporarily. |

Viewing Downloaded Files & Images |
Viewing Downloaded Files Use your browser to view the files later on your own PC. After opening the browser window, type the filename instead of the URL address and press <Enter>. For example, if you saved the files under a subdirectory named "download" on your C: drive, you would type "c:\download\pedigree.htm" with backslashes and without the quotes. If you are using Netscape or Internet Explorer, you do not have to be connected to the Internet to do this. If you are using the AOL, you must be logged on to use the AOL browser. Viewing Downloaded Images Similarly, an image can be viewed without looking at the page which contains it by typing the address of the image. For example, if you saved the soundexcard.gif image under a subdirectory named "download" on your C: drive, you would type "c:\download\soundexcard.gif" with backslashes and without the quotes and press <Enter>. |
