Note: These links will connect you with the home pages of other genealogical and historical sites on the Internet. These locations may become temporarily or permanently unavailable from time to time as their sponsors maintain, move, or remove their Internet locations or when network traffic is particularly heavy.

[Genealogy Toolbox]
1. Matt Helm's Genealogy Toolbox provides a unique set of online genealogy tools:

The Genealogy Bookstore lists books in print, primarily reference and how-to books and a few family histories, each with a link you can follow to order the book from Amazon.com. (Click "review" to get a synopsis of the book's contents.)

The Genealogy Software profiles products and companies.

[Cyndi's List]
2. Cyndi [Howell]'s Genealogy Sites on the Internet is a virtual encyclopedia of genealogy sites with over 31,300 links classified into 90 categories. If it's about genealogy, you can probably find it here. Seeing is believing, and no description of this site can do it justice!

[Janyce's]
3. In Janyce's Root Diggin' Dept., links are arranged under 16 "departments": her family, other families, beginning genealogy, tools, reference, regional U.S., regional non-U.S., specific heritage, Civil War history, miscellaneous, PAF and GEDCOM, newsgroups, free stuff, people search and adoption, newsletters, vital records, researchers, and commercial genealogy sites.

[Yahoo!]
4. Yahoo's Genealogy Page. Yahoo is a popular Internet search engine that maintains extracts of its information hierarchically by subject. Each page presents a list of related topics followed by a list of links related to the focus for that page. The surname list alone has over 1,841 names at last count. Other categories include beginner's guides, reference, mailing lists, Usenet, web directories, family organizations, and lots more. Sites listed are those that have been submitted for listing under Yahoo.

[Ancestors]
5. The Ancestors website, based on the popular PBS television series, offers a wealth of resources for the beginning and intermediate genealogist and provides access to their own database searches and genealogy links.

"Ancestors is a television series about genealogy and family history. Powerful stories of people whose lives have been changed through family history research are followed by experts who give practical instruction on how viewers can begin searching for their own roots." This series which first aired in 1996 will occasionally be rebroadcast on PBS stations.

[Gen. Resources]
6. Genealogy Resources on the Internet (first address) and (second address) by Christine Gaunt and John Fuller is an index to online genealogical resources to be found under the following headings: Mailing Lists, USENET Newsgroups, anonymous File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Gopher, World Wide Web, Telnet, and E-Mail. If you want to branch out from websites to find the more unusual Internet genealogical resources, this is the place to begin!

[Genealogy Home Page]
7. Stephen Wood's The Genealogy Home Page (formerly the Penn State Genealogy Archive) lists links in thirteen categories with corresponding access to a collection of files which can be downloaded. Categories include: Genealogy Help and Guides, North American Genealogy Resources, World-Wide Genealogy Resources, Religious Genealogy Resources, Family/Personal Genealogy Pages, Newsgroups and Mailing Lists, Searching for related genealogists, On line genealogy information, Internet Genealogy Guides, Libraries, Maps Geography Deeds and Photography, Genealogy Software, Genealogy Societies, Upcoming Genealogy Events, and Commercial Services

[Rootsweb]
8. The Rand Genealogy Club (a corporate recreational club), original founders of Rootsweb. The oldest genealogy mailing list on the net came from here. They now sponsor the Roots Location List (a searchable index of locations/researchers), the Roots Surname List (thousands of surnames/researchers) and a Soundex converter. There are sections on reference and historical information; regional, ethnic, and religious groups; computer and Internet, and other topics.

9. The Genealogy Helplist is an index by country and province/state of "volunteers who are willing to help others by looking up specific items at institutions near them, or help supply other information easily accessible to them."

[Fed. of Gen. Soc.]
10. Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) maintains a searchable master list of genealogical societies (its members), an events list, and a host of information to help genealogical societies run. Looking for a genealogy society in Timbuktu County? Start here!

11. Federation of East European Family History Societies Every page on the entire site is keyword searchable from their search page. For example, typing the two keywords Riga Latvia brings up fourteen web pages including a Latvia Research List and Archive, related books and websites, and information on microfiliming and place names. You can also search any of their many databases: surname, place name, society/organization, ethnic/religious/national, author/subject/title, professional genealogist, professional translator, and professional author/lecturer. The index to the FEEFHS Newsletters from 1992-1996 may alert you to interesting articles in back issues. There is also a "Map Room" of downloadable historical maps by country.

[Nat. Gen. Soc.]
12. The National Genealogical Society (NGS) website contains a wealth of information for NGS members and non-members alike. The NGS library catalog is online and offers a loan service to members. The NGS sponsors educational opportunities: the home study course in American Genealogy and an online Introduction to Genealogy. Books, forms, and a beginner's kit are offered for sale.

13. The New England Ancestors provides research how-tos, an events calendar, travel information, and a lot of material from the extensive library of the New England Historic Genealogical Society. A large part of the catalog for their member's genealogical lending library is available online.

14. Some interesting commercial sites include Family Tree Maker, Ancestry, Inc. and affiliated Rootsweb, Everton's Family History (formerly Everton's Genealogical Helper) with links under Research Helps and Net Resources, and Treasure Maps presenting a select list of great places to start or to learn something new and offering a free subscription to their monthly email newletter.
