Directions Directions

Follow I-96, exiting at I-127 north, then I-496 west. Follow I-496 west to exit 5, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd. Turn right (north) onto MLK Blvd. and go three blocks to Kalamazoo St. Turn right (east) onto Kalamazoo St. Continue one block passing Butler. In the middle of the next block, turn left towards the building. Follow the street, circling to the right, passing the library entrance. Turn right into the visitor's parking lot.

Parking Parking is available in the large lot across the street from the library at $.50 per hour on weekdays, free on weekends.
Holdings The Abrams Foundation Historical Collection is the tenth largest collection of genealogical information in the U.S. Manuscripts, diaries, newspapers, books, microfilm relating to Michigan history, genealogy, state and local government. Over 75,000 reels of Michigan newspapers on microfilm (available through interlibrary loan). All Michigan maps and atlases. Federal land patent records on microfilm. State census records. Federal census for states east of Iowa, 1790-1920. Ontario census, 1860-1881. U.S. city directories. County Histories of the Old Northwest, also Pennsylvania and New York, on microfilm. Over 20,000 family histories. Military records to World War I. All transcribed Michigan records: birth, death, marriage, tax, probate, land, town, church, cemetery. Michigan vital record indexes: births 1867-1915, deaths 1867-1914, divorces 1897-1947, marriages 1867-1920. Transcribed vital records for areas from which early settlers came. Many genealogical and historical periodicals. Centennial and sesquicentennial certificate applications with microfiche indexes. Surname index from genealogical society members. Michigan DAR repository.

Restrictions Open stacks, most items are non-circulating. Circulating materials available to all Michigan residents. There is a one hour time limit on microform readers if the library is busy.

Guide to the Michigan Genealogical and Historical Collections (1996), the Michigan 1870 Census Index (10-volume set available for $25 each), the Michigan Cemetery Source Book (1994) available for $20, and Genealogy Update (a periodic bulletin) for many topics. Now in preparation: A Guide to Genealogical and Historical Source Material Relating to Michigan, a shelf list of the most used materials with call numbers, expected publication, fall 1996. Family Trails periodical.

The Michigan Cemetery Source Atlas (1991) is out now out of print but used copies may be available through Bookfinder.
