Directions Follow I-94 east, taking the exit for Woodward and John R. (runs parallel to Woodward). Turn right onto John R., make the first right on Palmer and the first left on Woodward Avenue, going south. The library will be on your right in the second block between Kirby and Putnam. Alternate Directions Follow I-94 east, taking Trumbull Exit 214B. Turn right at the stop sign onto Trumbull, passing the Wayne State Stadium on your left. Turn left onto Warren (the first street after the Stadium), turning immediately after the cement median strip right next to the church. Follow Warren several blocks to Cass and turn left (or pass Cass and turn left into the parking lot). The library is a block and a half down on the right.

Parking One-hour metered parking is available along Woodward; two-hour metered parking is available along Kirby, Cass, and Putnam. Cost is $.25 per 20 minutes between 7am and 6pm; street parking is free after 6pm. Safer public parking is available in the lot at 62 W. Warren between Cass and Woodward (enter on the north side of Warren); the cost is $2 for the first half hour, $1.50 per half hour after the first, with a maximum of $6.00 per day. The maximum is $3.00 after 4pm any day and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. There is a closer lot behind the Detroit Historical Museum off Kirby between Cass and Woodward; the cost is $1.50 Monday-Friday 4:30-10pm and $3.00 on weekends, 8am-5pm. Underground parking is also available on Farnsworth southeast of the library (across from Putnam); this lot is east of Woodward and south of the Detroit Insititute of Art.

Holdings Over 350,000 items including books, atlases, maps, manuscripts, pamphlets, pictures, photographs and microfilm relating to the history of Michigan, the Great Lakes, and the Northwest Territory going back to the 1600s and including New England and New France. Transcribed and published cemetery readings. Family, local, and county histories and genealogies include genealogical materials for all U.S. and Canada. State and federal census records on microfilm. Detroit city directories (1837-present) and telephone directories for Michigan towns (1878-present). DAR and military records including Civil War Soldier's records (unindexed).

"Original source materials...include family papers, business records, organization files, church records, and archives of Detroit, Wayne County, and Michigan Territory... Thousands of pictures of Detroit scenes and people make up the Burton picture files. Many books, magazines, and newspapers have been indexed for illustrations. A large collection of postcards shows how city and state looked to tourists of earlier days... Emphasis is placed on maps and atlases of the Great Lakes area and the St. Lawrence River and valley. There are historical and rare maps of the eastern portion of the United States, manuscript maps, and atlases from 1645 to the present." Bound newspapers include the Detroit Free Press (1831-present), the Detroit Gazette (1817-1830), the Detroit News (1873-present), and Detroit Saturday Night (1907-1939). The collection also contains "ephemeral items such as newspaper clippings, broadsides, and scrapbooks," and the LDS IGI and Ancestral File CDs.

Circulation Area Materials in the Burton Collection are non-circulating; those in the Main Library may circulate to residents of the State of Michigan.
Restrictions Most materials are in closed stacks. Sign the register as you enter. Bring few belongings and no food or beverages; lockers are available. When using newspapers and manuscripts, notes must be taken using pencil instead of pen. The librarian may request a driver's license or photo id to hold while using some materials such as reserve items, files, manuscripts, photographs, etc. The librarian may also ask to examine your belongings when leaving.
Publications Genealogical Guide to the Burton Historical Collection - Detroit Public Library, Joseph F. Oldenburg, Ancestry:1988, and Guide to Manuscripts in the Burton Historical Collection, Detroit Public Library, Bernice Cox Springer, Burton Historical Collection:1985. The Library also provides booklets with call numbers relating to their holdings on "Sources for German Genealogy in the Burton Historical Collection" (1993), "Sources for French-Canadian Genealogy in the Burton Historical Collection" (1992), "Some American Indian Research Sources in the Burton Historical Collection" (1992), "Some Sources for Genealogical Research in Ontario" (1991), "Sources for Irish Genealogy in the Burton Historical Collection" (1991), "Sources for Black Genealogy in the Burton Historical Collection" (1989), "An Annotated and Topical List of Aids to Polish Genealogy" (1984), and a bookmark on "Detroit in Books".

Copying The Burton Collection has one copier at $.10 per copy and two microfilm reader/copiers at $.25 per copy. Fragile material is restricted and may not be copied as noted inside the front cover of books and files. A photostat or microfilm copy may be ordered through the library staff; these will be sent to you. For personal use, photographs may be scanned at $.50 per page or photocopied (by a photographer) for $10 each. You may also photograph them yourself at no charge. If photographs are to be published, the library charges $20 per photograph for the print plus an extra $50 for the right to publish. The Burton Collection has 14 microfilm readers and 2 microfiche readers.
