The Bible
Most people have heard of and read some/all of the Bible. It is arguably one of the most widely referenced books in today's world.
Simply stated, the Bible is a collection of separate books (stories) divided into two main sections:
- the Old Testament -- tells the story of God’s relationship with Humankind starting with the beginning of time; Man's fall from grace; God's relationship with the descendants of Abraham that became the original kingdom of Israel; and God's promise to renew the world through the Messiah
- the New Testament -- contains the story of Jesus Christ, God's only son, and of his birth, teachings, death and resurrection. Also contains stories about the first followers of Jesus, as well as letters from those followers to the early churches offering guidance and instruction in their new faith.
Christians believe that the Bible is the written Word of God. It creates and nurtures faith through the work of the Holy Spirit and points us to Jesus Christ, the living Word and center of our faith. And in reading the Bible, we are invited into a relationship with God that both challenges us and promises us new life.
