How can I get rid of an old computer?

What if I am not in the Ann Arbor or Washtenaw County area of Michigan?
If you are not in our area, don't bother to ask us if we know any organizations in your area, because we do not. We can make some suggestions:
- See Dell's "Donate or Recycle" Program
- Check out TechSoup's Recycled Hardware resources page.
- Within Michigan, see the State DEQ page on residential electronics collections.
- Do a web search, and you can do that yourself right here simply by adding the name of your city or state to this search
Donate to a Non-profit Organizations
Recent computers still retain some value, but usually not enough to bother trying to sell them. If you are in Washtenaw County Michigan or nearby, send mail to HVCN and we will find a tax-deductible non-profit agency that is interested in accepting your donation.
Donate to a Computer Reuse Organization
Working computers more than 3 years old are not worth much, but many can still be donated for reuse. See if your computer qualifies as a donation to Kiwanis or Recycle Ann Arbor.
Recycle your old computer
If your computer is broken or too old for reuse for these organizations, it is unlikely that you will find anyone who wants it. In this case, you should recycle it.
- See if there is a free computer recycling event coming up. These usually occur on weekends and are sponsored by local merchants or schools.
  - Best Buy regional recycling events
  - Climatesavers Recycling initiative
- Recycle Ann Arbor accepts computers for recycling at all times of the year, and this service is now FREE. Monitors may be recycled for a small fee.
