Construction Update
Over the summer, the Library’s construction project on Alpine Street kicked off. Several infrastructure items were completed during the summer months. The Library’s construction management firm, O’Neal Construction, oversaw clearing and site preparations, the installation of the underground storm water retention system, associated retaining wall and installation of underground utilities.

Construction on the site will prove challenging as access to the building site is constrained by Warrior Creek Park to the west and the railroad to the north. All construction will occur from the Alpine St. and parking lot sides.

Because of the confines of the site, portions of the parking lot will be installed this fall in order to facilitate the building construction, provide space for construction trailers and areas for firms to store construction materials. The installation of the first course of asphalt will also help keep dust and dirt from the site off Village streets.

The Library’s new building will be a big change for Alpine Street and, with the addition of the hard surface parking lot and building roof; the Library was required to create an extensive storm water retention system. All of the rain and snow falling on the property will be captured and held below the parking lot. This will prevent run-off into Mill Creek and the Huron River by allowing the water to drain into a series of holding tunnels and slowly seep back into the water table. This will also keep the new Library from placing additional stress on the Village storm water system.

The layout for the parking lot will give the passerby a good idea of the scope of the project. The concrete curbing is in place around the perimeter as well as the easterly entrance approach. Additionally, the electrical conduit and concrete pole bases have been installed both within the parking lot and along Alpine Street. The construction gate entrance nearer the Farmers Market is a close approximation of where the exit drive will be located.

The first course of asphalt has been put down. This covers approximately 2/3 of the parking area and was put in place to control dust and dirt in the neighborhood during construction. Final repair and topping will be installed at the end of the project.

Additionally, the building footprint is taking shape with the excavation for the lower level foundation. Warrior Creek Park affords a view of this portion of the work. The lower level of the Library will be set into the hillside with ample windows facing out to the park. This level will contain the Library’s meeting room space, Friends of the Library area, gallery display areas, mechanical rooms and storage space. The Library will be situated above the park level by several feet. From the Alpine Street level, engineers have staked out the footprint for the two levels visible from this elevation.
