Community Spotlight: Dexter High School student, Cassandra Hall, has created a web site on Ecological Awareness.

As part of obtaining her Girl Scout Gold Award, Dexter High School student Cassandra Hall has created a web site on Ecological Awareness. Hall has been involved with Girl Scouts since she was five years old. At the end of her junior year in high school, she decided to complete her Gold Award project. The requirements for obtaining a Gold Award involve completing prerequisites, which included the completion of several badges, the Senior Girl Scout Challenge and around 50 hours of career preparation and leadership work. The final project involves 60 hours of work demonstrating the candidate's leadership ability and desire to improve the community.

Hall describes her experience as follows. "I have been involved with Girl Scouts since I was five years old, when Girl Scouting was just about making friends and singing camp songs. To some extent, I suppose it still is about these things, although over the years it has evolved to include more volunteer work. When I decided to complete my Gold Award project, it seemed like a fitting ending to over twelve years of cookie sales and park clean-ups. When I got to the point of choosing my project, however, I was stumped. I knew that I wanted to help the environment, but I couldn't figure out how to do that. After some thought, I decided that I would like to educate people about ways to help the environment. I considered making a brochure, but the use of huge amounts of paper seemed to be contrary to my purpose. Luckily, talks with a few friends and advisers pointed me in the right direction: creating a web site."

The Dexter District Library is happy to help Hall publicize her efforts.
