Musical Notes

As the Lenten season winds its way towards Easter I hope you are enjoying the variety of music in our worship services. I especially enjoy the more somber, deep, reflective music that is part of our Lenten tradition. Thank you to everyone who contributed “favorite hymn” suggestions. We have been including at least one selection each week. Please continue to offer additional suggestions to the box on the table by the organ.

The chime choir will ring on March 9, the fifth Sunday in Lent. We begin Holy Week with glad hosannas on Palm Sunday. Linda Smith will set up the drama of the rest of the week as she sings “Via Doloroso” at the service’s conclusion. Maundy Thursday’s service of Holy Communion will include William Billings’ “When Jesus Wept.” Julie Nelson will sing Faure’s “Pie Jesu” at our penitential Good Friday service. Pastor Barb and Dr. Doug will read John’s version of the Passion story, interspersed with the singing of Passion hymn verses by Julie Nelson, Grace Johnston and Lauren Wright. Easter morning will be rung in with many glorious alleluias as we celebrate Christ’s Resurrection and Victory. Members of the chime choir will accompany the chancel choir.

Thank you to all our regular and volunteer choir members for all your extra time preparing music for our worship. Thank you also to our chimers for your enthusiasm in preparing our Lenten music. The March rehearsal schedule follows:

We are missing our special friend and alto Paula Herzog, who has moved to Minneapolis to start a new career in her profession as a registered dietician. We will miss her warmth, good humor and gentle nature and wish her many blessings as she travels down new pathways. We can stay in touch with Paula via email at paula8well@yahoo.com. Our prayers continue for Michele Bowersox, recently diagnosed with Meniere’s disease, as she faces many challenges in coping with the symptoms.  We are thankful that Linda Smith is steadily gaining strength in the use of her leg and foot after her Achilles’ tendon surgery last fall. We congratulate Linda as she begins her new position as a hospice nurse at a brand new facility near Jackson. We give thanks that God has opened a new door for Linda to bless many individuals and their families at a fragile time in their lives
