Every semester I send 2-3 of my undergraduate students to work at CAN-operated community centers. At each of these sites, my students tutor the children in their homework, teach art and cooking classes, and help produce the resident newsletter. As witness participants, my students consistently note how CAN's interventive practices make a real difference in the lives of the children at these sites."

Helping CAN

CAN provides much needed programs and services to our city's most vulnerable population, families living in public housing sites. At least 90% of families we serve have incomes considered (using HUD standards) "extremely low" - the 10% fall within the "very low" category. Our programs focus moslty on our youth.

Every weekday afternoon, children do homework, learn life skills and participate in enrichment activities in CAN's community centers. Since 2003, 100% of these students have graduated from high schools. Better yet, they have gone on to advance their education. These youngsters are well on their way to becoming self-sufficient adults who will give much to their community. CAN relies on you -- our collaborators, volunteers, and funders to help make these successes possible.

Volunteer

CAN's workers and volunteers can positively impact the lives of children who live and learn in a world that is very different than that of almost all other Ann Arbor families. (More)

Collaborators/Partners

CAN collaborates with several local resources, e.g., the U of M school of Social Work, Packard Community Clinic and several churches. The participation of our collaborators and partners are essential to our programs.
