SERENDIPITY
The Serendipity programs are operated at five other Ann Arbor community centers, in addition to Green Baxter and Hikone: Arrowwood, Bryant, North Maple, Pinelake, and South Maple. Serendipity programs are designed to enhance the academic success of disadvantaged children and youth, focusing primarily on reading and science. During the Serendipity Reading Club, children read aloud to volunteer tutors and choose two books to keep for themselves. This program obtains thousands of excellent books for free or at minimal cost. Serendipity also maintains a library—including a sizable reference section—at each of the community sites, providing a valuable learning center to residents. Serendipity works with the University of Michigan “Reachout” and “Camp Discovery” programs to lead weekly hands-on science projects, as well as science-related field trips, at four of the community centers. Additionally, a “Learning Tree,” used for the purpose of understanding plant life and photosynthesis, has been planted and maintained by Serendipity at each service site.
