Peanut Butter Surprises
This recipe is on a 3 x 5 card in my husband's writing. It has the ingredients and minimal directions.
1 Cup sugar
1 Cup Brown Sugar > cream
1 Cup Shortening
2 eggs - add to creamed sugars
1 Cup peanut butter (9 oz jar)
3 Cups flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt >add
4 Tablespoons milk
2 tsp vanilla
375 degrees, 10 - 15 min
That's all the card says. Here are my notes:
Cream together the sugars and shortening. Add eggs and peanut butter. Add remaining ingredients at low speed [I don't use salt in recipes]. I tend to alternate the flour and milk, but I'm not sure it matters.
The recipe doesn't say what the 'surprise' is, but my husband says that you're supposed to roll the dough around a Hershey's Kiss. Unwrapping 50 Hershey Kisses takes awhile, and anyway, it's not a surprise if you know what is inside, so I use various things. My favorites are 100,000 bars, NutRageous, Rolos, and Hershey Caramel eggs (cut into 5 pieces). Some of these tend to goo out the bottom. When experimenting with different things, you can put an M&M on the top so that you know later what you tried and can decide if you want to use that again.
Makes about 50 cookies. I usually double the recipe, but they do get stale after a few weeks, so eat fast or share.
